Whether kept in a home aquarium or pond, koi are prized fishes to keep and are very much appreciated by aquarists worldwide. Its ornamental value and symbolism makes koi keeping a very popular tradition especially in certain parts of the world. The longevity of these fishes is owed to their being hardy and ability to tolerate varying temperature changes. This particular species reproduce through spawning and the large number of eggs they lay is fertilized by either one or many male kois. Though known to be non-demanding fishes, caring for koi fry tells a different story.

When koi eggs are successfully spawned and fertilized, eggs needs to be separated from their parents to prevent them from being eaten up. Water temperature needs to be set to allow the eggs to hatch. Care for the resulting offspring involves quite a lot of work to ensure their survival. By this time, their mouths have not yet fully developed so feeding the fry for the first 3 to 4 days is discouraged as it would only cause the water to become cloudy and be contaminated. Making sure your pumps are functioning well to keep your water aerated is of utmost importance during this period as their respiratory system is still underdeveloped.

You could start feeding your fry on the third or fourth day. Newly hatched brine shrimp is mostly fed to the very small koi fry. To provide them the protein they require to develop and grow, hardboiled eggs or finely ground high protein koi food could be given. Daphnia, an abundant pond crustacean, is also among the recommended first foods for koi fry. By nature, koi are bottom feeders. Extra care is therefore needed when feeding fast sinking food since uneaten particles can pass unobserved and could cause water condition changes which could be disadvantageous for the fry. Frequent water change should be given attention to once feeding is started since the use of filters could risk some of the fry from getting sucked up into it.

Culling your fry could be done on the fourth week. The ones with certain deformities and unwanted characteristics could be taken to pet stores as donations. Koi with the characteristics desired for breeding will be kept and properly maintained. Raising koi fry may require a pretty amount of space and time, but the beauty and deeper meaning of keeping kois make the hobby very rewarding. Owning one of the most famous and fascinating underwater creatures makes everything well worth it.

The Siamese Fighting Fish, more called the Betta, has traditionally been kept by people for the past hundred years. Unlike before where they are purposely bred for fish fighting, the Bettas are becoming more popular as peaceful aquarium residents. Over a period of selective breeding, Bettas nowadays look vastly diverse from their wild ancestors. If you go around aquatic stores, Bettas could be seen in an array of beautiful colors from the ordinary black or white to some shades of brown and more attractive hues of red, turquoise and blue. They also appear to have more elaborated appearances of their finnage.

Known as easy to care for fishes, they are mostly preferred as first time fishes for kids and for those who lack the time for maintaining tanks. Unlike other fishes, Bettas do not require air pumps, filtration and aeration systems. These fishes breathe and survive by going to the surface for air. Such ability makes them do very well in a fish bowl and has no need for larger and expensive aquariums. Keeping two male Bettas in the same bowl should be avoided though as this would cause them to fight and lead to one of them dying.

Beta fish bowls could come in many sizes. With the innovations of fish care, newer forms and designs, and even colors, of betta bowls were made available apart from the more familiar glass bowls fish owners are most accustomed to. Glass bowls later on were manufactured in more creative and unique shapes. These newer breeds of fish bowl for bettas are more appealing to kids and makes attractive accents to any room. Thawallaquarium.com, Bettasecrets.com, Bettamansions.com, Bettabowls.com and Aquariumfish.net has a wide selection of betta fish bowls for sale. Prices may vary according to its material, size and sophistication of design. However, you could find more amazing price deals at places like Amazon.com, Overstock.com, Eopinions.com and Ebay.

Keeping your Betta in a bowl instead of a tank could save you a lot of space too. It is good to remember though that you should keep it planted to mimic your Betta’s natural habitat. These creatures also prefer warmer temperatures, so place your bowl near a light source. In making success in caring for your Betta in a bowl, it is advised to learn the most desirable parameters you should keep. Such information could be obtained from the internet. The wonderful bowls you can keep them in makes your betta experience much more fun. The beauty and the lack of complication in keeping this fish makes it no surprise why Betta is a popular favourite.

Kois are kept for many reasons other than its ornamental quality. Believed to be the symbol of love and friendship, these fishes bring some kind of good energy to any home. Their peaceful nature makes them great pets and the varied colors they come with are excellent for beautifying any tank or pond. The unique qualities of these fishes make them very much appreciated in the hobby and are often made collections. Every koi fish is unique and even if some of their colors and patterns may show similarities, no two of these species could ever be alike. To better distinguish each koi and from what lineage they belong, people came up with a way to classify these fishes. The basic varieties of Kois are identified according to their colors, patterns and scales.

White kois with red markings, the more popularly seen, is the Kohaku variety. Like the Kohaku, the Sanke is basically white, but it has red and black accents to it. Similarly, the Showa variety is white in appearance, but red and black markings are more predominant. Another red and white variety is the Koromo, but the blue-bordered scales on top of the red make it more distinguishable. Kois with blue backs are the Asagi variety. The Shusui has similar colorations with Asagi. This one, though, represents a single line of mirror-like scales on its back. Ogon are metallic with a single solid color. Kois in solid colors but with black blotches are the Bekko variety. Utsuri mono have black bodies but with the presence of white, yellow or red patterns on it. Kumonryu has black bodies with white markings on it, but the patterns over the black appear to be some shower clouds. Kin-gin-rin, a metallic scaled Koi variety, is considered one of the most beautiful species of Koi because of its sparkled scales. The Tancho variety is either solid white or black with a single red patch over its head. Kawarimonos are kois that cannot be categorized with the other varieties.

An average Koi owner does not need to be that versed about the terms to describe Kois. These breeds could actually be described in many aspects, each way no less correct than the other. With its many combined features, different people have different names applied to a certain breed of Koi. But apart from the numerous varieties of Koi, there are rare kinds of Koi constantly sought for by many enthusiasts. The metallic properties (Hikari) of Koi are prized, and in certain varieties, are even purposely bred for. Hikari Utsuri is one that is much appreciated for its beautiful display of luster. Kin Rin Koi is among the rarest varieties and well admired because of its pear-gold reflective scales. Among the Bekko variety, Ki bekko is a yellow koi with black markings are the rarest breeds. Ki Utsuri, an Utsurimono variety has black base color with yellow markings. Attractive as it is, this kind is not easily available. Tancho Showa, Doitsu Goromo-Shokikubai, Gin Rin Matsakawabake, Gin Rin Sanke, Aka Mizuho Ogon and Aka Matsuba are considered rare as well.

Though more common kois may cost you a few tens of dollars, the rare varieties may fetch a price of hundreds to even a few thousands. With the beauty and positive energy of these fishes, enthusiasts are more willing to bid and pay for a rare koi fish. Anyone would be intrigued with its very unique patterns. Kois are truly show and collection quality species.

Whether you are new to the fish keeping hobby or an expert aquarist, it is easy to be familiar with live bearing fishes. More commonly called, livebearers, these fishes are easy to care for and raise since they can adapt to varied water conditions, making them among the top choices for starting out aquariums or for those who do not have much time to maintain a tank. Popular fishes like guppies, mollies, platies, and swordtails are among the family of livebearers and have been in the aquarium hobby for over a hundred years. These species are often large in size. Such makes them less vulnerable to predation and along with their peaceful nature, makes them perfect to keep in communities.

A very distinct characteristic of live bearing fishes is their ability to retain eggs inside their body, and give birth to live offspring instead of laying eggs. That, and their attractive coloration, makes enthusiasts find these fishes very desirable to keep. They are also the kinds that are easy to breed and are favoured by many breeders. Since they are readily available, you could easily find different species of live bearing fish for sale in many local aquatic stores and online fish retailers. To ensure you get good quality live bearing fishes, only buy from reputable suppliers. That is easy if you purchase locally. However, buying your live bearing fish online would require a little research about the place you wish to order it from before deciding to pay for it. Surely you would come across with live bearing fish for sale ads at Ebay and similar sites; but not being able to obtain the much needed information from your buyer or as to how reliable they are is not a very good idea to purchase your fish.

In buying livebearer fishes online, more popular sites are preferred. If they are located from other states, they would surely ship you your order. It is important that the place you purchase form has some information about their facilities, their fish source and their staff. That would give you a fairly rough idea on the quality of the fish you will have and how professionally they are handled. Petco is one popular online site and had earned quite a reputation over time now. Other places that have live bearing fish for sale you might wanna check out are Aquariumfish.net, Karmafarmaquatics.net, Tropicalfish-breeders.com and Liveaquaria.com. It is also good to learn about the kind of livebearing fish you wish to keep before deciding to buy one. That way, you are better prepared to care for it. When they are well looked after, you will enjoy them better and have a more rewarding experience with them.

To have more knowledge about maintaining them, you could look up many reliable aquatic care websites online and get the information you need. However, when you feed your goldfish, do your regular maintenance and checkups, you get the chance to interact more with them. Constant interaction helps you get to know your fishes much better and have wider understanding of their needs and general behaviour.

When you are new to keeping fishes, you would find yourself often alarmed at every slightest change you will notice on them. Every fish keeper must be aware of the several diseases a fish can get and finding white spots on your goldfish’s gills would be reasonable enough to be concerned. However, if you are more familiar with goldfishes, you would know that finding white spots on goldfish gills is not an alarming thing, but a normal occurrence. These spots, more often called tubercules, naturally develop on the gill plates of a male goldfish when they sexually mature. The breeding tubercules feels like sandpaper when you try to hold your fish to feel the gills. Although sexual maturity of a goldfish could be attributed to several other factors like its size, age, sex and health, the white spots are one of the indicative factors.

When these white spots develop somewhere else in the body of your goldfish, and worse, noticing that your fish is somewhat unwell and irritated, it is an indication that it is sick. Your goldfish might be developing a form of fungal infection called Ich if you see spots on his body that appears like sprinkled salt. Unlike the breeding tubercules, these spots are soft to the touch. When these spots appear larger and more blotchy, your fish might be infected with columnaris (oftentimes called flex) which is a deadly bacterial infection. There is also a form of parasitic infection (called ‘White Spots’) that affects lesions incurred from rubbing against objects. They appear white and small like that of a pinhead size and are found on the fins and body of your fish. These many conditions often occur when your water conditions are not properly maintained.

The white spots on your goldfish’s gills do not indicate a problem. You see, your male goldfish is now in his prime. He is mature enough to mate, and you should prepare yourself coz you would soon be seeing newer members of your goldfish tank.

The popularity of goldfish among aquarists is owed to its amazing characteristics. Its attractive colors and lively nature brings so much life and energy to any home aquarium. But fish keeping isn’t just about bringing home a fish and putting in your tank for you to watch and enjoy. It involves some degree of care and time to make sure your fishes stay healthy and will live long. Maintaining your goldfish tank includes many aspects. The water conditions, temperature, lighting, equipments, feeding schedule and so much more needs to be attended to. One thing you have to make sure when caring for your goldfish is that they get adequate oxygen. Oftentimes, fishkeepers would notice their goldfish coming up to the surface of the tank or bowl appearing to be blowing bubbles. Others would think their fish is hungry, or trying to make bubble nests, or even playing around. When you see this behaviour in your goldfish, it is actually an indication that it is need of more air. A goldfish is very sensitive to oxygen shortage, and gasping for air at the water’s surface (‘blowing bubbles’) is the quickest way to express their distress.

Lack of air in the tank could be attributed to certain factors. Perhaps you are keeping your goldfish in a bowl or a small tank not adequate enough for the space your fish requires. Adequate space is needed in order for your goldfish to breathe properly. Make sure your tank is big enough, or if you do not have one, you should avoid overcrowding your tank. Too many fish could deplete the available oxygen in the water, and eventually suffocate your fishes. There is a guide followed by fishkeepers as to how much fishes you could stock in your tank to achieve enough space healthy enough for all aquarium inhabitants to thrive. Information for such could be obtained from fish care books and websites. But your local aquarium fish dealer could advise you on that too.

Live plants could bring a lot of good things to your aquarium and more importantly to your fishes. Adding plants to your aquarium is a good way to create an environment for your fishes that more closely resembles their natural habitat. Your aquarium inhabitants would appreciate having plants around coz it makes them feel more at home and to have lots of hiding places. It also makes your tank a lot more attractive. But their ability to give off oxygen is what makes live plants excellent additions to your tank. Regular water changes and maintenance is also a good way to keep parameters within acceptable limits. You should also check your filters and pumps and make sure they are working well. Keeping water temperature somewhere between 74 to 76 is said to be best in keeping goldfishes. When it’s too warm, your goldfish would try to swim up and gulp for air. Some would advise putting airstone in your bowl. Your goldfish blowing bubbles is something that should be given immediate attention. If these signs are ignored, it might be too late for you to save it.

Guppies are wonderful fishes to keep. They are known to stand hard water, high levels of salinity and tolerate water changes. They also hold great ornamental value. When you notice that your female guppy is pregnant, you would expect having to deal with a large number of fry in just a month’s time. These fishes are outstanding brooders and when females are always kept with the males, you would have plenty of guppy fry swimming in your tank. Watching your guppy fry wiggling around is a very enjoyable view. But raising the fry isn’t really as easy as it looks. Controlled breeding is necessary for female guppies if you do not have all the tanks to accommodate the fry. Local fish stores, however, take guppy fry donations and could well keep and raise them. If you intend to raise the guppy fry yourself, setting up a few tanks for them to grow out would be of importance. Since this fish is easy to breed, it is easy to produce many variations in the colors of this species. This gave birth to the popularity of a wide selection of fancy guppies. They do appear more attractive and appealing, though fish keepers have noticed they are much weaker and have the tendency to die easily in poor water conditions. Many people still prefer keeping the wild guppies as they are the hardiest kinds. Caring for its fry is much more assuring too. Guppy fry development follows a certain pattern.

The first four weeks of your guppies are the most critical, and it is when most of care and attention are to be given. It is around this period where the kind of care you provide could make or break your guppies. In fact many expert breeders are constantly trying to develop diverse methods to handle guppy fry during the critical first month. A fish keeper had to properly ensure good water conditions and feed the fry as often as time would permit to allow them to build body and muscle tone. Feeding them 4 to 5 times would be ideal; however, if you could feed them more often than that, it would be good for your little guys. At the end of their fourth week, your fry fully develop their gender and becomes sexually active on the sixth week. It is during this period (between the fourth and sixth week) that male and female guppies should be separated into groups. It might take a little work as it is done individually on each fish, placing each on a water filled clear container and observing it through a magnifying glass to identify whether it has the gonopodium or the gravid spot. This is performed to avoid mix ups and for a more successful controlled breeding.

During the 6th week up to the 6th month, deformities may develop in some of the fry and taking out the bad fishes is necessary. The procedure is called culling, and ensures only the good and healthy ones are left in the tank. Local fish stores would be very willing to take your culled fry if you wish to donate them. Guppies are considered adults on their 6th month and onwards. During this period, guppies continue to grow, but growth is more channelled into his finnage size and development. They keep on growing even up to death, however the rate of their growth is much slower. These fishes generally thrive for 1 to years, but water temperature and general water conditions could greatly influence their growth and survival. Fancy guppies tend to live a much shorter life span.

Frequent water not only helps remove harmful ammonia and waste from the water, but is also found to help spur the growth of the fry. When your tank lights are turned on more often, your fry would feed more frequently. Since lights could affect fry development, tank owners oftentimes leave the lights on as much as possible. It is important for fishkeepers to understand the stages of guppy fry development to raise healthy and happy guppies for them to keep and enjoy for a long time.

Keeping and raising guppies is a very rewarding experience. These active fishes are very appealing and their colors are very fascinating. As active breeders, caring for guppies involve constant dealing with its fry, as your females guppies can get pregnant much often than other species. Raising guppy fry could even be a more enjoyable experience. Not much expertise is needed to successfully do it, but a little basic knowledge would do. The first four weeks of your young guppies are necessary for body and muscle building, and are the most critical period of their overall growth and development. During this time, your guppy fry are fed as often as possible. Others would feed their guppy fry about five times in a day, but doing it more often, like up to 10 times in a day would be better for them. Their very small digestive systems require refilling every 20 minutes to maximize their growth period.

When kept in the same tank with the mature ones, they usually feed on the leftovers and nibble on the algae. Usually, when the fry are housed in a different tank, they are fed with some baby brine shrimp or ground flake fish foods. The nutrition obtained from the brine shrimp is found necessary for the fry to develop and enhance their coloration. Color enhancing fish food is strongly discouraged. They do not provide the necessary vitamins and your fry needs the proper nutrition to properly grow and develop. They need protein source too, which is easily obtained in fish food supply stores. But if you could cook them up an egg yolk, they would love it. Other options in feeding your guppy fry are micro sized live food, paste food and special fry formula dry food you could purchase from pet supply stores. Your guppies would also enjoy some live tubifex worms, walter worms, mosquito larvae, wingless fruit flies and vinegar eels.

The water temperature is a big factor in the growth of your guppy fry. An increase of the temperature speeds up their metabolism. You would have to feed them more often, but you could expect them to grow much faster and healthier. How you care for and feed your guppy while they’re young could make or break the quality of guppies you have as they turn into adults. Feed them right and feed them well. When your fry are well nourished, and your tank is kept at its best condition, you will definitely be looking forward to having show quality guppies in the weeks to come.

If you are keeping guppies in your home aquarium, you must be aware by now at how often the females breed. Since a female guppy could get pregnant as often as every 30 days, there is a need for controlled breeding if you do not have the tanks to accommodate a large number of fry. If breeding is properly spaced, you could better manage and care for your guppy fry. When you notice your pregnant female guppy drops her youngsters, it would take a little work for you to help them grow and develop well. Fry tend to be eaten by the mature guppies when they’re kept in the same tank, it is then advised to separate them or utilize a breeder box, net breeder and a larger tank of about 5 to 10 gallons in size. If the adults are well fed, there is lesser chance for the fry to be eaten. However, providing the safe zones for the young ones is always advised.

Caring for your fry involves determining their genders to do controlled breeding at the earliest time. Generally, guppies have a tendency to have more female offspring. Though you can’t sex guppies unless they are adults, there are a few identifiable differences between a male and a female guppy to be able to tell which is which while they’re young. Only males develop colors on their bodies and their anal fin is somewhat pointed. It is very seldom to see female guppies with bright colors such as their male counterparts. They tend to be more active than the females too and are found to chase around a lot. Females usually have grayish shade on their body, and they have rounded anal fin. In about 2 to 3 weeks, female guppies develop a gray spot (gravid spot) a little above their anal fin area. This can be better seen when you place them on a clear glass. Expert aquarists could be able to identify the spot earlier than that. A guppy does not have to be pregnant to see that dark spot on their body.

Waiting for the gonopodium in males is said to be the most reliable way to identify a guppy’s gender. It is a somewhat modified fin that appears gray and horizontal. It is said to be the determining factor in the gender of guppies and other livebearer fishes as well. However, it takes a while to see that, and by that time, your female guppies may have become pregnant already and setting up a proper breeding strain may be too late already. Breeders who wish to sex them earlier develop many ways to be able to do that. They usually give the fry a good feed, some use spirulina or any brand would do, and take a close look at them when they are full. Prominent pot bellies could be observed from female guppies and males will show pot chests. Proper sex identification would mean effective breeding for your guppy. Learning how to tell the gender of a guppy fry is important if you are keeping these fishes in your tank. With a little experience, you would be able to enjoy your fishkeeping experience much better with your guppies.

A common freshwater aquarium fish, guppies are known for their extraordinary colors and patterns sure pleasing to have in any aquarium. Active and fascinating, they make wonderful additions to anyone’s reef display. The popularity of guppies among the many fishes best kept in home setting is probably owed to its ease of care and being hardy. The many wonderful qualities of this fish made it very much recognized in the aquarium keeping hobby.

Guppies make great community fishes too. Though they could get along easily with many other species, guppies are most comfortable being around with those of their own. If you are keeping your female guppies along with the males, chances are they would get pregnant about once every 30 days. Keeping guppies need to have certain knowledge about these finned creatures. How frequent they multiply is one thing you need to watch for if you want a controlled breeding. Your local fish retailer could offer you helpful advises in performing controlled breeding successfully. But as a fish keeper, it is important for you to be aware and watchful of signs of guppy pregnancy.

Your female guppy is pregnant when she starts developing a dark spot (known as gravid patch) under her tail, towards the back of its stomach. As the babies start to form, you will notice this spot would increase in its size and would tend to appear much darker. On the final stages of a guppy’s pregnancy, its patch would turn black and your guppy is very bloated and fat. Many other observations are noted from a female pregnant guppy such as constant arching of their back and pushing, a noticeable fading of their coloration and their vent would appear slightly opened. They would also behave quite differently and would often sit on one spot, would either not feed or become more a voracious eater; they could also become very skittish or very aggressive at times. When pregnant guppies become stressed, they remain pregnant until they eventually die. Expert aquarists would advise isolating your pregnant guppy and prepare her a place she could lay her fries.

With more guppies, means a lot more of beautiful swimming finned friends in your aquarium. Naturally you have to make sure they stay best in shape too. Guppies are a pleasure to own, and very much rewarding to keep. When you know how to care for them right and deal when your females become pregnant, you will have plenty of healthy and happy guppies and a splendid aquarium display.

One of the most spectacular fishes ever to exist in the reef, the flame angelfish is a popular choice in creating the most stunning aquarium display. Since fish tanks are known to add beauty to homes, aquarium keepers would put in endless efforts and imagination to bring the best appeal to their aquariums. Because if its extraordinary physical quality, probably all aquarists have kept a flame angelfish, or at least considered owning one. As its name suggests, a flame angelfish appears bright red or somewhat red-orange resembling that of a flame. Its color makes the black vertical bands on the sides of its body stand out, making it very attractive. Adding it in your reef show would definitely make your aquarium an eye-catching centrepiece.

Being a dwarf angelfish, it hardly grows more than 4 inches in length. But then, with a flame angelfish, beauty does come in small packages. Despite the size, a flame angelfish could cost between $40 to $60 each. It may be a lot of money to pay for an ornamental fish, but its beauty is so well worth having one in your tank. Reputable aquatic stores would even sell them for over $60. For fishkeepers, paying extra for a quality breed is worth it. But since they are not very picky eaters, the price tag seem to be reasonable enough. An added plus, as this species is advised to be best kept in larger aquariums over 50 gallons, many hobbyists claim to have made great success keeping a flame angelfish in a smaller tank. However, breeding this particular species is quite difficult. Though not as readily available as many common aquarium fishes, the flame angelfish isn’t rare and could be bought in certain pet stores. Of course, whatever you can’t find around, will always be available online for an extra shipping cost. Freshamrine.com, Getahugetank.com, Thereeftank.com and Saltwaterfish.com has flame angelfishes available for sale or easily facilitated orders.

Nothing can make any aquarist resist the beauty of this fish, not even its cost. Recognized as one of the most beautiful and attractive ornamental fishes, you could never go wrong with a flame angelfish. Its brilliant colors would awe any guest and make viewers appreciate the splendour that lies underwater. With all its qualities, no wonder it is sought for by many aquarium keepers. Flame angelfish for sale is available if you look. Keep one as a flashy addition to your aquarium and to your home.

People keep fishes for the many rewards the hobby bring. Known as hardy fishes, goldfish are popularly kept in home aquariums and garden ponds because the many advantages for keeping such species proves to make anyone’s fishkeeping venture more worthwhile. We know as fishkeepers, we should look after our aquarium’s and pond’s water conditions and over-all environment to make sure our fishes stay healthy and are free from diseases. Hardy as they are, our goldfish could get sick if not cared for well.

The many diseases that could affect your goldfish are a result of any or a combination of several factors. Your goldfishes’ genetics, environment, nutrition and many harmful microorganisms like parasites, bacteria and fungi all contribute in causing certain health conditions to your fishes. Though there are certain genetic anomalies in your goldfish like lack of an eye, odd-shaped mouth or late color changes that can be tolerated, genetically diseased fishes are mutated and have unexpected developmental changes which could already affect their health one way or another.

Environmental conditions could cause your goldfish to have Swim Bladder disorders. Because of such, aquarists should be watchful of high nitrite contents and generally poor water conditions. Parasitic diseases that could affect your goldfish are Ich, Anchor Worms, Fish Lice and White Spot. The Ich (Ichtyopthirius) is the most common of all. When your goldfish is stressed, it becomes more vulnerable to this condition and is known to be deadly if not managed early. Similarly, White Spot is a stress-related condition. When Anchor Worm and Fish Lice attach to your goldfish, they could be manually removed. But the problem of its ability to quickly reproduce makes management of the condition to take a little while. Bacterial infections known to goldfishes are FinRot and Dropsy. FinRot is an opportunistic bacterial infection that takes advantage of frail fishes. It is characterized by white edges on your goldfishes’ fins, but is generally easy to cure. Dropsy, on the other hand, is an internal infection that could cause the scales of your fishes to appear sticking out, and is most detrimental, often causing your goldfish to die. Like most bacteria, fungal infections are opportunistic and would tend to thrive on open wounds, causing a white cottony appearance on your fishes’ injuries. Your goldfishes could also experience digestive problems such as constipation when they are not eating the proper food. With cause not fully understood, Hole in the Head is a deadly disease most prevented by maintaining water on a regular basis. Less common, but could affect your fishes, are body and gill flukes, costia, lymphocustis, velvet disease, columnaries and Trichodina.

These diseases that could affect your goldfish have certain treatments and management options. But knowing the best water temperature, diet, space requirements and more of their needs would prepare and equip you in preventing such. Examining your goldfish regularly, water-quality checks and proper maintenance, along with a proper understanding of your goldfishes and all conditions most suited for them, is important to have disease-free goldfishes.

For many aquarists, the Queen angelfish is considered one of the most beautiful fishes in the reef and with its beauty, would be great to own. Normally found in warmer marine water in the tropical and subtropical regions, these brightly colored reef inhabitants are among the large sized species within its genus. Its beautifully blended yellow and blue coloration makes it glow and stand out in any aquarium setting. They oftentimes show variations in their color and markings. As they become adults, they turn somewhat greenish-blue or greenish-yellow. Queen angelfishes are territorial and aggressive. Their intolerance to water condition changes and difficulty in feeding makes the unsuitable for beginning aquarists to keep. They are also prone to icks, flukes and certain fish conditions. Since these species could grow up to 15”, they require a bigger tank, and more maintenance cost. With the many downsides involved in keeping a queen angelfish, it is still very much sought for because of its outstanding beauty and attractiveness. Its ornamental quality makes it very recognizable in the marine aquarium hobby.

Definitely an expensive fish, they are sold according to their sizes and could cost around $50 to a couple of hundred dollars. Showcase sizes would cost close to $500 but because of their unique physical qualities, are found to have high demands for in the market. Their being active and lively, spending most of their time out in the open, makes them quality fishes for display shows. Queen angelfishes around 1.5 – 3” are considered small in size and are priced at $50 to $85. Smaller ones could cost a little less. The 2 – 4” queen angelfishes are considered medium and are sold between $80 to $120. When their sizes reach 4 -5”, they are categorized as large and could costs around $150. Between 5 – 7” are extra large in category and costs $250. When they reach 7 – 10”, they could qualify for show sizes, but are definitely more expensive at $349. Though local aquatic stores have them, they could also be looked up in places like Saltwaterfishshop.com, Freshmarine.com, Aquahobby.com, Timstropicals.com, Justrarefish.com and many more sites that could offer better deals on the prices.

A queen angelfish is quite a showy and bold aquarium inhabitant, very much a beautiful fish to showcase your reef tank with. Aquariums are known to bring appeal to your living space. Something unique like a queen angelfish could bring the exotic and sophisticated feel and look to your tank. May be a pricey fish, but is sure worth investing in.

Feeding your goldfishes is the best time to bond with your fancy-finned pets and is among the most pleasurable moments in the fish keeping hobby. A simple procedure as it is, and even kids could do it easily, many aquarists are misguided on what to feed their fishes. Generally, goldfishes would devour anything that would fit their mouth, and could be greedy creatures. Many fish keepers feed their goldfish with common tropical fish food and claim to work great for them. But since they need sufficient amount of protein, vitamins and carbohydrates, nutrient-packed foods specific for goldfishes should be fed to these little guys. Fortunately, everything your goldfishes require is readily available in pet supply stores. There are a couple of hundreds of sites that sells goldfishes foods in all brands and variety. But to make sure you are giving your fishes what they require, purchase foods that displays its nutritional contents. That way, you are certain about what your goldfishes are getting.

Goldfish food could come in many forms. You can feed these lovely creatures both with wet and dry varieties of fish food. Goldfish flake food is most convenient to feed and easiest to obtain from stores. They usually consist of brine shrimp and are found helpful in preventing bladder conditions known to fishes. Goldfish pellets have the same composition as the ones that come in flakes but are packed as pellets. There are different options for goldfishes’ frozen food. Goldfish keepers can opt between live frozen brine shrimp, tubifex worms, frozen daphnia or mosquito larvae. Freeze-dried goldfish foods include Pacific Plankton, bloodworms and krills. Lettuce and peas are easy to chew and digest and are among goldfishes’ favourite home-prepared foods. They would also feed on eggs, cucumbers, spinach and fruits like oranges and grapes. An occasional snack would not hurt. It is good to offer some live food or leafy vegetables once in a while for some variety. Like any other pets, they have their personalities too, so even goldfishes could get bored with their food. But remember not to overfeed them.
Depending on the size and type of goldfish you have, you should follow the specified amount of food you are allowed to feed them in a day, and how often. Anything more than the required is considered waste and could pollute your water.

Don’t forget, there are so many varieties of goldfishes. In picking their food, it is necessary to seek advice from the aquatic supply retailer personnel or expert aquarists on the best recommended food for the type of goldfish you own. Goldfishes are wonderful, rewarding pets. By understanding how to properly care for them and choosing carefully what to feed them, they will thrive happily and healthy.

Known to be among the popularly domesticated fishes in the past up to present, goldfishes are suitable inhabitants both for home aquarium and garden ponds not only because of their attractiveness, but from their being inexpensive and easy to care. If you are planning to set up a pond in your backyard, it is important for you to know a little about the types of goldfishes that could best thrive in it.

Goldfishes are differentiated into two types, the flat body and egg-shaped body, where the flat body are considered hardy, easier to maintain and breed and are more competitive than the egg-shaped. These qualities allow them to survive outdoor water temperature inconsistencies, making them more suitable for outdoor environment. Except for the fantail, black moor and ryukin, egg-shaped gold fishes could not survive pond settings. However, there are certain types of outdoor goldfishes for certain climates. Lionheads, orandas, moors and veiltails, for instance, would only do well in ponds in the tropical regions during summer. That allows them a more balanced water temperature for them to adapt to. On the other hand, the common goldfish (or feeder goldfish), jikins, wakins, London shubunkins, Bristol shubunkins, comets and fantails can be kept even in subtropical climates and could survive and thrive in ponds the whole year round. Even these hardy fishes become sluggish on cold months. They normally tend to eat less and would prefer to stay at the bottom of the pond. When it gets warmer, goldfishes start to become active again. Though the fantail is a very common pond goldfish, the comet is most popularly kept in ponds. More than their names imply, Goldfishes exist in a far wider variety of colors. Shubunkins have a light blue shade with more colourful patterns. Veiltails and orandas are more pearly white in hue but the attractive golden crowns orandas have makes them far more attractive. Blackmoor is very dark in color compared to the rest of the goldfishes. Generally, these goldfishes make good inhabitants for your pond.

Plant your pond to make your goldfishes feel close to their natural habitat and create a great ecosystem. It makes your pond look more serene and appealing, and your goldfishes feel safe. Just like you do with your aquarium, monitoring your pond water is a must as well. These goldfishes could be hardy, but they need to stay healthy too. When they do, they will wonderfully thrive and your beautiful goldfish pond will give you enjoyment and relaxation for the many years ahead.

Pets are fun to have, and they add so much life to any living space. However, they require a great deal of time and attention. Kids would always long for a pet, and starts begging their parents for one, but they do not realize all the responsibilities involved in its care. Because of that, fishes make excellent pets for kids, though not too many asks for it. They’re fun to watch, and they could be relaxing at the same time. It doesn’t cost so much to keep one, they need not be groomed or taken for walks, or even scheduled for vet appointments. Aside from the ornamental value of keeping a fish tank at home, there are a lot of other benefits in keeping fish for a pet.

Fish are relatively easy to care for and could give you and your kids the pleasure and rewards you are looking for in keeping a pet at home. Before introducing one to your kid and to the whole family, there are a number of things you, as the parent would have to consider though. In choosing which fish is ideal as pet for kids, you have to think about the ease of care required and make sure you little one can handle the responsibility. Definitely you would pick out fishes that are known to be hardy. You have to think about the cost too; there are a lot of great fishes kids can care for easily that is inexpensive. The maintenance cost is another thing. Coldwater fishes are known to cost much less because their tank lacks the heating requirement. Coldwater fishes are also sturdy and tolerant to water temperature changes and don’t easily get sick. So okay, your little one will have his pet, and will be feeding his fishes and take care of them like parents themselves. But when it comes to cleaning the tank, the job would most likely be done by you, so maybe you would consider fishes that have low waste output as well.

If you start going around pet stores and ask which fishes are best to be kept as pets for kids, Beta Fish, Goldfish, Guppies, Swordtails and Platies are just among the most common names that would pop out. The Beta fish (also known as Siamese Fighting Fish), is inexpensive to buy, do not require much space, do not require filter because of its low waste output, and has no need for a heater. The Goldfish is easy to care for. They are long-lived and require only the simplest daily care regimen. They are attractive because of its bright colors. They can also tolerate and would even prefer unheated tanks. Single-tailed common goldfish and Comets are the exceptionally hardy among the family. Domestic fantails are also known as hardy and could be good suggestions. Fancy goldfish varieties like Bubble-eyes, Orandas and Lionheads are great to have because of they are most attractive, but they could require a lot more care for kids to handle and might need some help from more experienced fish keepers, or maybe from you.

Guppies are inexpensive, attractive, easy to care for and most adaptable because they are able to live in various tank conditions. Swordtails are attractive and active swimmers. They are fun to care for and have great ornamental quality. Platies are sturdy, friendly and active fishes. They are the hardiest among the livebearers. Platies are fascinating to watch with the great variety of colors they could come in. Like the Platy, the Tiger Barb is also known for its being active. Koi, Danios, Tetras and Gourami are known hardies and low-maintenance fishes. Tetras can even thrive in acidic environment. The White Cloud Mountain Fish is very ideal because of its extraordinarily peaceful character; it is also known to be tolerant to water temperature changes and could thrive in really low temperatures most fishes could not survive in. They come in a lot of variety, but most are very attractive and could make a great desktop display.

Swimming around the aquarium alone is never fun, you kid might want to give his fish company and put up a community tank. If planning to keep a community tank for your kid, choose fishes that are compatible and will not eat each other. The Green Catfish could be a great addition. They are peaceful and have great personalities. They also love to charm their owners. They love to eat the scraps and debris other fishes had missed out by vacuuming them up from the bottom of the tank. Another fine scavenger that makes wonderful additions to the aquarium is the Albino Morph. The Albino Morph could also go with any water condition. If your fishes are well chosen, they will live together in harmony and will create a stunning aquarium display.

Setting up a fish tank to prepare your kid for his pet might be overwhelming. But fish stores have available tanks that are sold as a complete package. Fish retailers can even help you and your kid set it up and offer advises to help care for the fishes and keep them healthy. Keeping fishes as pets can be both an enjoyable and educational experience for kids. Take time to choose the best fish pet for your kid and help him begin his aquatic adventure. With the right fish your kid will have a beautiful underwater display everyone will admire and for him to be proud of. Your kid would look forward to coming home from school everyday.

The African Butterfly fish makes excellent community fishes and are great additions to your reef tank. They are graceful swimmers and its bird-like finnage could add so much fascination and ornamental quality to your aquatic display. Tankmates for this fish should be chosen carefully though, as the African Butterfly fish can be a predator and would prey on smaller fishes. They can be relatively peaceful if kept with similar-sized or larger fishes.

This fish feed mostly on surface insects like moth, spiders and flies but will also feed on smaller fish food like flakes, frozen or freeze-dried crickets and worms. However, with its reasonably sized mouth, fishes under 2 inches can be considered food by the African Butterfly fish and are out of the question in selecting tankmates for them.

Known as carnivorous hunters, the African Butterfly fish are known to best tolerate being in a tank with their own species, or better yet alone. Though generally, they can really be a good community fish. There are many other factors to be considered in choosing co-inhabitants for your African Butterfly fish. As surface dwellers, they will often not tolerate other surface-dwelling fishes. They see them as competition for food and would tend to be aggressive towards them. However, they can stay peaceful with mid-dwelling and bottom-dwelling fishes. With its shy personality, the African Butterfly fish would even often ignore them. It is important for tank keepers to learn more about the kind of fish they wish to add in their African Butterfly fish tank to make sure they would get along. Such helpful information can be obtained from the fish store keepers and even online.

Its long trailing finnage could appear tempting to fin nipping species and should not be kept on the same tank. A few recommended tankmates for your African Butterfly fish are Congo Tetras, Elephant Nose fish, Synodontis Catfish, African Knifefish, Ctenopoma species and some other African species. Oddball fish, Plecos, and larger Scavenger fishes make suitable tankmates as well. If you keep an African Butterfly fish in a tank with Mudskippers, Minnows and Cherry Barbs, they would get along just fine.

Knowing a little bit about your fish and their suitable tankmates is always helpful to keep your reef showcase peaceful. The African Butterfly fish is a beautiful fish to keep, and is sure important to have a little knowledge on it if you intend to keep one. The exotic appearance of this fish easily makes it a favourite for many aquarium keepers. With its interesting personality and with the proper conditions, your African Butterfly fish could pretty much be a centrepiece in your aquatic display.

The African Butterfly fish (Pantodon Buchholzi) is an interestingly unique fish with wing-like patterned pectoral fins resembling that of a butterfly’s wings, which probably how it earned its common name from. This fish originates from the slow flowing rivers in the tropics of West Africa. It may be odd-looking with its boat-shaped body and rectangular appearance, but the African Butterfly fish is one of the most graceful swimmers you can ever have in your aquarium.

Most shades of African Butterfly fish are drab, grayish green with brownish tinge. Their fins would have an alternate dark and pale- colored rings and they are known to have a dark band running from the top of their crowns through the areas around their eyes extending to their lower jaws. Their seemingly large upturned mouth is designed to capture small prey along the water’s surface as this fish is known to be a predatory surface hunter. It would prey on worms, insects, live spiders, moths, and flies. Small crickets make great prey for them and smaller surface fish will be considered food by the African Butterfly fish.

Although possible, this specie is quite difficult to breed. Peat filtration is required to be able to breed them and a tank with a large surface area as possible is needed since this species are egg-scaterrers. Spawning takes days and the its fry are even more difficult to raise and overly-sensitive to water quality changes. Your African Butterfly fishes has a lifespan of 5 years and with the right conditions, they could live even longer.

These surface dwellers are excellent jumpers and can actually glide short distances. If you are keeping an African Butterfly fish, having a tight-fitting cover for your tank is advised to prevent them from injuring themselves as they constantly jump out of the surface of the water. The tank set up for this species should have slow water movements to resemble its natural environment. With the right adjustments, water movements in your tank can be kept to a minimum to work best for your African Butterfly fishes and since these fishes will do best in slightly soft acidic water, it should be considered in maintaining your tank.

Relatively peaceful in the absence of smaller fishes, the African Butterfly fish can be great community fishes, and would be an interesting addition to your aquarium. It is a fascinating fish, and a very good recommendation to anyone who has a freshwater tank.

Keeping an Oscar fish is one of the most rewarding experience any aquarium hobbyist could have. You would be amazed on the personality these fishes possess. They are very smart, personable and active. They have their way of charming their owners as they somehow behave like dogs and more often, family members.

If you keep an Oscar fish and plan to have a community aquarium, it would take a lot of consideration in choosing tankmates for your Oscar. Aggressive fishes like the Oscar fish could do well in large groups, but would tend to fight if there’s just a few of them. It’s either keeping one Oscar fish or many of them, but not a few. A few Oscars kept in the same tank would result for the stronger one to bully the weaker one. But the more Oscars that live together would divide the abuse of the strongest Oscar. Generally, Oscars do best if kept alone but a male and a female Oscar would pair up pretty well. Oscars of the same size will less likely result for the weak one to be bullied. These fishes are territorial and aggressive, they will eat anything that fits their mouth so adding in smaller fishes in your Oscar tank is not a wise idea. Because of their hearty appetite, smaller fishes introduced into his territory become quick snacks for the Oscar fish.

Oscars can be paired with other species as well, but only with those of the same size or larger ones. In choosing tankmates for your Oscar fish, caution should be observed as more aggressive specie may tend to bully your Oscar too. The Large Plecostomus is among those known to be best tankmates for the Oscar fish. They will also do well with some type of barbs, Synodontis catfish, Scavenger catfish and Black Lancer Catfish. Other large neotropical cichlids such as Jack Dempseys, Jade-eyed Cichlid, Chocolate Cichlid, Salvini and Texas Cichlids may also be considered. Other South American cichlids are also about the same size of Oscars, and sometimes could be larger, can be suitable tankmates as well. If you wanna go for Silver Dollars, Pecos, Severum, Pumpkinseed, Banded Leporinu and Blue Acara, they are known to get along with your Oscar fish, and are possible additions as well. Clown or tiger loaches and sharks may also be added in.

The Oscar fish is an excellent choice for an aquarium and deserves to be the center piece of your showcase. Their personality makes them wonderful pets. Keeping them with other species may take a lot trial and error. It does pay to learn about these interesting creatures. If everything works out alright, your aquarium will result to a very beautiful display.
