Certain species of fishes tend to jump out of tanks, most often injuring themselves and even end up getting killed when left for long out of the water. Most of these fishes are the known insect eaters who constantly jump out of the water surface to catch insects for food. Hoods are designed to allow lighting fixtures to sit on it and have holes small enough for the heater and filter cords to pass through, but never too big to encourage fishes to jump to the visible opening. A less common option for fish tank lid is wood because of its price. Cheaper alternatives for preventing fishes from throwing themselves out of the tank are steel screen wires or nets. They serve the same purpose and are most affordable but could allow much of the water to evaporate. Others opt to use obstacles like floating plants or decors but do not really provide much protection as custom fish tank lids.
Fishes are worth keeping. But it takes more than a tank, water and equipments to set up an aquarium display. Many things are to be taken into consideration to make sure you can get the most of your aquatic experience.
